Malealea

Over Easter 2007 a party of Year 9 students joined staff, doctors and engineers on a further Expedition to Malealea in Lesothu, southern Africa.

The Expedition intended to strengthen the relationship our school has with this remarkable community.  The objectives of the 2007 Expedition are detailed below and if you wish to assist this development please contact Ken Dunn on 01142 358137

Water, Wood & Wonderment!

An environmental and developmental project by The City School, Sheffield working in partnership with Royston High School, Barnsley

In March/April 2007, 33 students from The City School and Royston High School, accompanied by teachers, engineers and a doctor, visited the remote village of Malealea in Lesotho, Southern Africa.

With help from sponsorship, the students were able to complete a number of conservation, education and health related projects in the village.

These projects united communities from South Yorkshire and Southern Africa and show the true strength of Pupil Power!

How can your company help?

Can your company provide sponsorship for all or part of the following projects?

Water for Life: To develop small scale water projects such as rainwater harvesting, irrigation reservoirs and freshwater wells.

Smokeless Stoves: To develop a smokeless stove “enterprise” in Malealea which will produce inexpensive fuel efficient stoves for use in traditional rondevals (round houses).  These will create a smoke free environment and reduce soil erosion as less wood will need to be harvested.

Environmental Sustainability: Rehabilitate erosion scars and undertake an ambitious tree
planting scheme and thereby support two tree nurseries in the valley.

School/Partnership: To provide educational materials for Malealea High School and its family of Primary Schools. We will also  provide assistance to create school gardens in which pupils will grow their own food.

Aids Orphans: To provide scholarships (£113 per year) to put students through High School education.
